GRUMPY GLORIA

That's how GRUMPY GLORIA, my second book, starts. Gloria has a really bad day when her best friend (a little girl) gets a new doll. She feels ignored, and nothing will make it right...until the surprise ending!

Just like LLAMA LLAMA RED PAJAMA, GRUMPY GLORIA is a book about something close to my heart - in this case, a friendship between a little girl and her dog. I had a few bulldogs when I was growing up, but one - Homily - was very special to me. She and I were good friends for about sixteen years.

This is Homily. She doesn't look very happy, does she? Actually, she usually looked this way, even when she was happy! Homily was one tough little dog. One day, when I was a little girl, she got out of our fence and ran up the street (she loved to run, which is unusual for a bulldog). I ran after her, but oh no! she ran right into the road and a car drove right over her! There was a big BUMP noise and then the car sped away (mean people....they didn't even stop to see what happened). As you can imagine, I was screaming and crying, and when I got to the road, she was lying on her side with a big set of tire marks running over her belly. I thought she was dead. For a minute or two, I just cried and cried, and then Homily picked up her head and snorted. She stood up, shook herself, and ran back down the street to our house! You've got to agree that that's one tough dog!
